Change.org Petition: Creativity & culture are a human right (Reform copyright worldwide for non-profit sharing)

Creativity & culture are a human right (Reform copyright worldwide for non-profit sharing)

She tweaked the text in response to some of my comments.

The Issue

The problem with intellectual property, consisting mostly of copyright and patents, is that it hinders innovation. Ideas can’t be owned, since we are one consciousness, and creativity is created through people, not by people. Copyright is a tool that limits basic civil liberties and stops the flow of culture, yet is justified and disguised as protection of intellectual property.

Copyright is not needed to protect artists when artists benefit from non-profit cultural sharing. People’s right to access information and share in their own homes should not be limited by copyright. People filming coffee mugs, book covers, etc., should be a natural thing to do. People getting criminalized simply for sharing culture is wrong.

We demand lawmakers and platforms to:

• Legalize all non-commercial, harmless, creative sharing (covers, fandubs, fan tributes, etc.) without getting blocks, strikes, or account loss worldwide

• Recognize cultural sharing as a fundamental human right

Why this matters

Culture thrives when it flows freely, not when it gets restricted. Culture is necessary and a part of our daily lives. For centuries, people have always shared culture.

How the current system unconsciously hurts rights holders:

Pushing people away from sharing makes them disinterested, something Rick Beato and his fans predicted. Charles Berthoud also talked about similar side effects.
